The PowerHockey USA is a non-profit 501 (C) 3 corporation, and member of Move United, dedicated to allowing many participants the opportunity to play electric (power) wheelchair hockey. Our sport is called PowerHockey™.
Our Mission
To provide a quality hockey program for persons who require the use of an electric (power) wheelchair in daily life.
Through PowerHockey™, we seek to break down barriers associated with disability and sports. PowerHockey™ provides a competitive sports opportunity for persons not possessing the physical upper body strength needed to participate in other sports (such as wheelchair basketball, sled hockey, quad rugby, etc.). Participants not only get to be a part of a fast paced exciting program, they build life long attributes such as teamwork, good sportsmanship, strategy, goal-setting, self-confidence and self-esteem. Being a part of a PowerHockey™ team, league or program provides an incredible social opportunity that may not have been available to the participants. Many teams or leagues plan secondary events such as pizza parties or group outings to sporting events.
Goals & Future Plans
It is a our goal and desire to provide the basis for other interested parties around the country to start playing PowerHockey™. We will provide the support and knowledge as the basic starting ground for other individuals or organizations to become involved. From experience we know there is enough interest in any major city or area to develop a program. Power wheelchair users are regularly contacting us, looking for a program near them.
As a national organization dedicated to promoting and developing PowerHockey™ programs we have created a national and international network of information about PowerHockey™ or similar hockey programs. PowerHockey USA is the headquarters for others to be informed of rules, teams, leagues, tournaments, news and to obtain support in starting their own team or league.
In the future, tournaments, both national and international, will be planned, allowing teams from all over Canada, Europe and the U.S. to come together and compete for championships.
